Kim suggested that I post this ... I was fortunate enough to be asked to read and comment on a chapter from her Columbine book. Reading the fan comments from you guys quoted in this chapter, something struck me:
Did you notice how "I’m Not the Only One" is often mentioned as the song that has meant the most to someone? It seems that the meaning of that song, to many people, is different from the meaning it has to Richard. It’s not about being cheated on – it’s about knowing that you are not alone in feeling and thinking what you do. I think it’s interesting how not being the only one is important. Is it because we are afraid to be different and always want to belong to a group (cp. “American Cliché”) or is it just because we like to know that even though we think we are different, we are not alone.
Please let me know what you think. In the word(s) of The Master ... Discuss!

First of all... Second of all...yeah...it wasn't an accident that I included all the posts that mentioned that song...SO MANY of us did when we wrote about what Filter lyrics mean to us (and in other threads when we talked about our favorite Filter songs)! And I think it has a TREMENDOUSLY deep meaning...that we all connect to THAT song... I'm Not the Only One I think sometimes we feel VERY alone with our intense feelings...and music--Rich's music and his words...THAT SONG...(and others) help us to see we are NOT alone... In terms of the book I'm writing--and the Columbine shooting...I think Harris and Klebold and others like them...the marginalized (and most of us have felt like that at one time or another)...probably felt as if they WERE the ONLY ONES...to feel or experience something...that's a horrible place to be...and songs like I'm Not the Only One help us to feel connected... Anyway...I'm glad Ama brought this to the board...others look back at that thread and see... fdgv20.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=1&action=display&n=1&thread=1335&start=0and this one, too fdgv20.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=1&action=display&n=1&thread=1283it's amazing...the power of that ONE song... Eh, I talk too much. :-) Someone else say something...

yeah even musically the song turns into this angry yet kind of '"over it" criscendo (sp?) at the end. there is an incredible amount of pent of anger that comes out, but not in a poor me, or pathetic way........
Ive heard that rich writes songs for some different reasons. Like for example i heard that he said, Hey Man Nice Shot's lyrics were about, although later he recanted when the family sued, that guy from Ohio who blew his head off on tv, then rich remarked how the chorus, and title, were inspiredin part by hunters who were so proud of hiding in camo, using a high powered rifle, with a scope, to kill deer.
another example, TAP was about him being nude on an airplane, then the Hey Dad part was his search for some recognition after having lived off his dad while recording Short Bus and having left the most recognized band in the world NIN.
i have always found it amazing how he says so much in so few words....
no wonder it takes about 2 years for him to do an album..
worth the wait? i think so

Well, I guess I wrote most of it in the original post already but my feelings for 'I'm not the only one' stem mainly from the fact that when I first heard it...just last year...I was recently divorced... And altho I wasn't cheated on it hit me hard because...well simply...I wasn't the only one anymore to someone I had loved for a long time! And the part that always got to me was the ' Is this the last time I'll ever see you, is this the last time I'll ever meet you, is this the last time I'll ever make love to you...' - part! That is the devastating thoughts you have when someone leaves you ' I love(d) you and now I'll never see you again? ' Miss Blue did the same thing for me!
Also I do think it is important for people to know they are not alone in reacting certain ways or feeling certain feelings cos it makes us accept ourselves better! If others feel the way I feel sometimes than that means I'm not so strange after all! Personally I'm kinda grateful sometimes that not more people are like me cos I don't think being me is so great...but it does make me feel slightly better about myself knowing that there are people out there with the same type issues I have! Songs like this show me that!

Hmmm...this is taking the thread off topic...so I hesitate to even respond...but...Dwyer's widow didn't sue--she called the record company and "complained"--wanted an explanation--but no lawsuit was filed...
And Dwyer was from Pennsylvania...btw...

I'm Not the Only One....any thoughts?? heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel yeaaaah! Yeah and it goes a lil summin like dis It is a good song. This song rocks my world. I feel like crying sometimes when I hear this good song. This song is good played loudly. This song is very enjoyable. It makes me smile. The humping smilies make me smile too. Maybe they are humping to the beat of the song. Maybe.Seriously though, the song means a lot to me, although I have never been hurt like Richie. (thank God and knock on wood) I learned how to play it on guitar and it is just flat out amazing. -Meg (listening to The 4th)

Just to clarify some info, first Hey man was based on Richie observing a man on television reaching a point of such despairation, that he felt the only way out was to kill himself. But how he chose to do it was so intense, by way of a live broadcast on tv, that anyone who saw it was just shocked by how raw and real it was. There was no way to prepare yourself it just happened. The song was not to glofiy his death and say he was right, just that he did it in a way that caused many people other than just family to deal with it. The story has neverbeen recanted by Richie, there was some confusion in the beginning that it was written about Kurt Cobain, but the song was done 2 years before that. As far as the law suit, it was dropped after Richie spoke with the family and explained the song was in know way meant to be disrespective to him. As usual Happy Life.

Back to ' I'm not the only one '...
Yesterday I heard it played in an old episode of 'Charmed'!!! When Prue (Shannen Doherty) is her 17 year old self, in a car, unknowingly flirting with a demon named Dragon! LOL Suddenly there's that part that always gets to me...' Is this the last time...' being played! WOOHOO!!! Seems Filter gets played everywhere but on the radio!

Seems Filter gets played everywhere but on the radio! I was thinking the same thing. I guess that all of these other outlets know what we know and we are waiting for radio to catch up.

There could be a couple reasons for that. I deduce the following:
- Reprise sucks and hasnt been doing their jobs
- With the summer concerts coming up, stations tend to play a lot from those artists that are taking part in them

Seems Filter gets played everywhere but on the radio! ...I heard - "You Walk Away" on Crime Scene Investigation and also (this is really old but I only just found out about it ) "Hey Man, Nice Shot" is on The Cable Guy... Filter songs can be used in any movie for any mood any time! What a range.... LJC

Ok.
I think that the reason so many people mentione "I'm Not The Only One" is because it's nice to know that people understand the pain that you are going through. To me, it's not about being cheated on.
The song has such depth. It's so simple, but it's like a river of emotion flowing from Rich's voice, the simple bass line, and the pumping drums leading up to the climax of Rich screaming "the last time i'll ever.... you" Everything about that song is special.
I don't mind being classed as 'different' as such, but I don't want to think that my feelings are different to others. It's nice to know that other people will react to thngs the same way.
Kinda going off the point there...

I also think that alot of people relate to "Miss Blue". (NOt saying that we dont relate to all of Filters songs) Breaking up with someone is a thing that everyone experiences, and they all feel that sense that they are alone and that no-one understands and they tend to want to dig themselves into a hole and die. At least I did. "Miss Blue" makes me cry everytime. I tend not to listen to it when I'm happy, otherwise I'll get all emotional and philosophical. The emotion that Rich puts into his lyrics is amazing. He simplifies all of his experiences and makes them universally understandable and easy to relate to, which is why they bring up emotions in everyone. Alos, I'd quite like a look at that chapter? Kim? Any chance of that
