Some of your posts made me wonder ... does it really matter to what genre of music a certain song belongs if it has something of value to give the listeners? What I'm trying to say is that I'm not a big fan of stuffing bands into boxes saying "punk", "rock", "indie" or whatever. So many bands are capable of mixing the genres that to me, labelling them is the same as restricting them ... I am aware that this is practical and difficult to ignore, but I can't help thinking that it keeps a lotta potential fans away from music that they might really like. Example ... guy walks into a record store looking for a new album. He's never really been into "hard rock" which is what eg. Staind is labelled as at my local record store. What if all the music was just alphabetized? Then the guy could go pick up an album that, for some reason, appealed to him instead of choosing something from his usual "type of music". Did that make any sense? There's nothing better than buying a new album and discovering that the music is just right! Music is so important to me that I don't really care what genre it is as long as it means something to me. I just realized that I couldn't even say what I wanted to say without subconsciously thinking of genres. That's what the bloody music industry has done to me. I'm brainwashed! Ama

Blink?? What ever happen to Green Day??
Genres: I go into a record store, i look and see "Coutry", "Rock", "Teckno", "Hip Hop/Rap".. Genre i stay away from "Hip Hop/Rap".. Am i missing anything, uh, no.. How do i know i'm not missing anything, MTV, BET, blah blah blah.. Only time one can watch actual great videos is between 1am-5am Central.. Genres don't necessarly cancel out other bands.. It just gives a quick ref to what one is looking for and wadeing through the other stuff your not looking for.. Only reason i would actually venture into the "hip hop/Rap" section would be for: Beastie Boys, Run DMC, House Of Pain, a very few others.. And all those i mention are pioneers..
J. Lo, N'Sync, blah blah blah.. I have no real use for a "band" or "preformer" that don't play thier on music and just uses samples.. If i wanted to listen to Teckno, i'd put the Crystal Method or the Chemical Brothers in.. Hell, they know how to do it..
I have to agree with Wark on Sex Pistols..
There's my opinion.. Sure to piss someone off..

Yep. That's why I said that genres are practical. I just think that sometimes you need to disregard them because they are so inflexible and even if everything was sorted alphabetically, you'd still be able to stay away from the music you don't like. Presumably, you wouldn't feel more compelled to buy a Britney Spears album just because it was under "S" instead of under "pop" or whatever. (That was just an example. Dunno why she popped into my mind) Anyway, I just voiced my opinion. I never expected everybody to agree. I just thought I'd share and give people the oppurtunity to agree or disagree. Ama

Green Day had a problem with their sound back in the late 90's. A lot of their following thought they were too main stream and gave up on em. That seems to be an issues amongst bands and their fans.
I agree about the Sex Pistol's stuff. They were definately the true punk sound.

I HATE the whole 'they've gone mainstream'...'they are so commercialized now...'-bullshit!!! So bands are only good to listen to when you feel like you are the only one who like them? When others discover them and they become popular...it's not cool enough anymore?? That is pathetic to me! I stand up for what I like...I don't start dissing bands I once liked cos ppl turn against them! A lot of ppl do and that sucks!!!!!! Still just my two NICKELS worth! ;D

That's a very good point, badass. I totally agree (not surprising, eh sis?) ... unless by "mainstream", you mean that they become like any other band and lose the diversity. I see no reason either though, to stop liking a band just because millions of others start to like them. I just love your subtlety, hun! ;D Ama

yeah Limp Bizkit always sucked! I don't go by genres either. You like what you like, no matter what type of music it is. I am tired of all these wannabe punk and nu metal dick smacks that have to do the big soundoff of "Pop sucks man! Britney Spears can kiss my flat white pimply ass man!" ugh! Do i really give a shit about your opinion when you're in the same dishpan as her? I miss the days when you didnt have to be a sterotypical emblem of the genre. Now if you like heavy metal or "punk" you have to be full of tattoos and piercings and wear safety pins and have green hair and have a bad attitude about everything. You can wear bobby socks and a cardigan and still be a hardcore metal fan. This shit bugs me cause I feel like I have to dress the part to be accepted. I'm tired of it and I will no longer need to prove to people that I do like heavy metal but just dont feel like wearing the oversized zipper pants and a System of A Down t-shirt! I like many other artists that arent metal but still have a huge impact in music and are true artists like Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Tori Amos and many others like that. Don't let the media influence your life and dont let some wasteoid call you a fag cause you dont wear what they wear. Be your own person, that's the sole prinicple that should be embedded in people's minds nowadays! Hey, I like silent movies too, you think I'm a loser because of that?

Charlie Chaplin rules!!! And I like the silent version of The Lost World so much better than the newer version as the second JP installment. Silent movies are cool!
