Okay, here's the deal. To be able to sit my final exam in Religious Studies later this year, I have to hand in a research project on absolutely any topic that has anything to do with religious, moral or philosophical values. So, I chose CD piracy and copyright. I think that this is an apt topic, what whit Napster, Kazaa, Winmx etc being very popular now. I know that Rich is against it, and I have to have a view for CD piracy and a view against... So, what are your views on CD piracy and how do you think it could be stopped?

I have no clue as to how it can be stopped but I agree that it's wrong to download stuff instead of buying the cd's! Artists spend time and money on making that music, we as fans should be ok with paying a lil to listen ( altho I do feel the prices are WAY too high, at least here in Sweden!)! I have been known to have stuff burnt off other people's cd's tho and I do feel ashamed of it actually My comfort is that most of the stuff I've had burnt lately is music that I already bought once...on vinyl, that I now can't listen to! So someone who has the same stuff on cd makes me a copy! I don't feel bad about that at all!

Maybe CD piracy is partly to blame for the collapse of the music industry... That and the complacency and dumbing down of the listening public!
Ok, so we're all agreed that the music industry is run by Fat Cat b*st*rds who are only interersted in profit, but as CD sales have dropped and downloads have increased, maybe that's got a good deal to do with it...
Personally, I'm DEAD against CD piracy as I've seen the industry I work in collapse in a matter of just a few years...

I am for downloading. To a point. I think the whole problem lies in the price of CDs. If the greedy industry didn't charge me twenty bucks for a CD I'd be more inclined to buy the same CD at ten. I'm sorry, maybe downloading drove the price up, but before we had Napster, ect, we had the prices sky high and when people found an alternative to buying a CD they want at outrageous prices they took it. It's similar to the VCR/Hollywood battle that occured when VCRs first came out. Now, do you want to tell me I can't tape a television show to keep? I'm all for supporting the ARTISTS, it's just those damn industry execs that I could care less for. I buy the music I listen to, except for live bootlegs. I trade for those. .lmao. I just think the industry should take a hard look at what the real reason is. Sure, downloading can be a part of the problem, but their high prices seem to be the major problem as far as I can see. Everyone I talk to that downloads tells me, "I don't want to buy twenty dollar CDs but when I see a ten dollar one I usually walk out o the store with it." That's just my opinion. Support the Artists; Execs, bring the prices down!

I agree with you there - CDs cost about £1 to PHSYICALLY produce but the way the money from the sales is distributed with GROSS bias towards the wrong people.... Lets' face it, studio costs aren't as exorbitant as before because producing music in the artists own home set up is VERY cost effective and can be of great technical quality if done correctly, physical production costs of the CDs has fallen dramatically, and the list goes on, so where the F... does all the money go?? Some execs overloaded pocket... Grrr argh! I'm all for the artists!!!

Ah...
I've suddenly twigged something I should have explained in my first post, what I meant is that I'm against people making direct copies of CDs and then selling them on as real ones on a mass scale. (Like you sometimes find in markets and in dodgy retail outlets). That's what I understand as being "CD piracy".
Downloading is a whole different kettle of fish...

I think in terms of previewing albums its a good thing but I can also see how it could be abused. I'll cop to downloading stuff off the inernet on a regular bases. But I either own the cd a song is from, or I intend to get it. I have trouble seeing how its any diffrent than when they put a record button on a radio. Some of you may remember that the same arguement was raised at the time. "OH GOD ITS GOING TO RUIN THE INDUSTRY!" Well the industry is still here an doing just fine! The only ppl loosing money (and a minimal ammount at that) are the big draws. Ironicly the very same ones that claim there protecting the rights of the "little guy". If artists don't want their music downloaded then they need to find a way to work with the sites because much like the record button their not going away. Its short sight'd to think so . . .

Based on recent things I've read, the industry is not exactly doing fine--file sharing has hit the industry hard--continues to...
it's serious shit...
I don't give a crap about the suits...it's artists like RIch I care about...and file sharing fucks THEM...on top of the industry shit...

Speaking of Radio, I think some of the problems the industry is having IS the Radio. The fact that 1,100+ stations are owned by Clear Channel in this country tells you something. Think about it. People like ME who have ONE station that plays NEW "music" has NO other choice to hear the stuff such as Filter, NIN, Depeche, Audioslave, Disturbed or any of the up and comings unless they sound like Britney Spears. What do those people in THOSE areas where music is DEAD as far as they are concerned do? They turn to the alternative. Downloading. Yeah, it hurts the artist to lose the money, BUT a new fan might be born from that ONE download. Think about it. Downloading is not all evil and it is not all good. Nothing really ever is.
