Pro Tools can be used either own it's own using - for example - the mouse to "draw" in the fader movements, but most engineers prefer a "hands on" feel of a console, so various manufacturers (like Mackie or Digidesign themselves) have made controllers (consoles - in effect) that an engineer can twiddle knobs and slide things up 'n' down to their heart's content). It makes working a helluva lot faster (and depending on the quality of the console) more accurate and easier if you have all the buttons, knobs and faders infront of you. These consoles also come with stuff like talkback, inputs for external sources (i.e. a CD player or DAT), etc so they work pretty much as a normal console would. For example: at one of Sky TV's studios - where I am at the mo - I use a Mackie HUI as a controller for Pro Tools. I'll snap a pic if you like! And... I’ve sussed out the nearfields! I'm DAMN sure they are Mackie HR824s!! (or community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=showMyPhoto&albumID=68778543&photoID=69869964&security=ZTvinm ) I’ll post a pic from Webshots for now, but what I MIGHT do is quickly make up a webpage of Filter Gear on my own website and “re-point” all the pics, so we can dispense with the above mentioned Not-Very-Useful-Place-to-Post-Pics-if-No-one-Can-See-‘Em Site!! I’ll see what I can do! (Although I’m either working, writing or doing my end of financial year accounts this weekend… so I’ll try sneak a webpage in there SOMEWHERE!!!!) (I ain’t gonna rest until I’ve got every scrap of gear named, am I?? ;D ) And yeah, I'd LOVE to have my own studio!!!!! I'd have the latest SSLs and more Pro Tools rigs than you could imagine possible!!!!! And I'd have it all in a GORGEOUS old mansion in the middle of the countryside (as a residential studio), but not TOO far from the city, with lots of animals wandering about! (by "animals" I DON'T mean stray drummers!) ;D
